NORTHERN Province Permanent Secretary Bernard Mpundu has disclosed that Mpulungu District has so far recorded 72 suspected cholera cases, of which 29 have been confirmed positive.
Mr Mpundu said of the confirmed cases, 19 are Zambian nationals while 10 are from neighbouring Tanzania.
One death has been reported, involving a Tanzanian national.
The Permanent Secretary said Government is taking decisive action to contain the outbreak.
“Government has intensified sensitisation among citizens, and yesterday, the Ministry of Health launched the cholera vaccine, which is being administered to everyone in the district,” he said.
Mr Mpundu also clarified that there have been no confirmed cases of cholera in Mbala District, as all suspected cases were determined to be typhoid.
He made these remarks when Special Assistant to the President for Politics Levy Ngoma paid a courtesy call on Mpulungu District Commissioner.
And Mr Ngoma underscored Government’s commitment to public health.
“Government does not desire to see people die of cholera. We are working to ensure all necessary measures are in place to save lives,” Mr Ngoma said.
Later, Mr Ngoma met Senior Chief Tafuna, where he conveyed President Hakainde Hichilema’s desire to continue working closely with traditional leaders.
