Government has called on the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC) to ensure that the execution of its regulatory functions is firmly anchored in the law while maintaining investor confidence in Zambia’s mining sector.

Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Permanent Secretary Dr. Hapenga Kabeta said the MRC has a vital role to play in ensuring that regulatory decisions that are made are guided by the provisions of the law and implemented in a manner that supports the growth and development of the country’s minerals sector.

The Permanent Secretary was speaking during a familiarisation meeting with the MRC Board and Management in Lusaka on Wednesday aimed at enhancing understanding of the Commission’s mandate, functions and operational structures.

He emphasised the need for the Commission to work closely with Government and other stakeholders to ensure that regulation of the mining sector contributed to sustainable investment, economic growth and national development.

“Effective regulation should provide certainty to investors while safeguarding Zambia’s interests and ensuring compliance with the law,” Kabeta said.

MRC Board Chairperson, Matongo Matamwandi, said the Commission was pleased that the Permanent Secretary had convened the familiarisation meeting.

He described the meeting as an important opportunity for the Board and Management to gain a deeper understanding of the Ministry’s expectations and the evolving institutional relationship between the two entities.

“The meeting was particularly important as the MRC assumes a number of regulatory functions that previously sat within the Ministry,” Matamwandi said, adding that a clear understanding of the respective mandates would strengthen coordination and improve service delivery.

Meanwhile, MRC Director General, Dr. Tom Hara said the Commission had continued to strengthen its systems, structures and institutional capacity to effectively execute its mandate.

He added that the Commission remained committed to building a professional, transparent and efficient regulatory institution capable of supporting responsible mineral development and maintaining confidence among investors and other stakeholders.
