Breakthrough Moment: MultiChoice Talent Factory Opens Doors for Victor Mwakapila

AT just 23 years old, Victor Mwakapila is stepping confidently into the next stage of his creative journey as one of Zambia’s newest representatives at the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy. Born and raised in Zambia, Victor brings with him not only youthful energy but also a deep commitment to elevating Zambian storytelling on the global stage.

Before joining MTF, Victor worked as a freelance photographer and videographer, focusing on fashion, beauty, and documentary projects. These experiences sharpened his eye for detail and honed his ability to capture authentic moments. Yet his ambition reached further—he wanted to deepen his craft and learn from industry leaders across Africa. “I want to sharpen my craft and learn from the best. MTF gives me the chance to grow as a filmmaker, collaborate across Africa, and tell authentic Zambian stories with global impact,” he reflects.

Victor’s creative passions lie in directing, cinematography, and lighting—areas he believes are the heart of visual storytelling. “I love using visuals to shape mood and emotion, and directing allows me to bring everything together into one vision,” he explains. At the Academy, he is eager to strengthen his technical skills in cinematography and lighting while collaborating with other talented creators from across the continent.

His greatest inspiration comes from legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, renowned for his mastery of light and composition. “I admire how he uses shadows, natural light, and colour to create emotion beyond dialogue, and that is the approach I try to bring into my own work,” Victor shares. Like his role model, he hopes to capture emotions that resonate universally, transcending language and cultural barriers.

Looking ahead, Victor is determined to use his MTF experience to contribute meaningfully to Zambia’s creative industry. He envisions raising the visual standard in local films through stronger cinematography and lighting, while also sharing his knowledge with other emerging filmmakers. “I want to pass on what I have learned through workshops and collaborations, so the industry grows as a whole,” he says.
