Bus & Taxi owners call for more parking space after 41 drivers arrested

At least 41 bus drivers have been arrested for parking in undesignated spaces, amid concerns over limited parking space at some bus stations in Lusaka Central Business District.

This has prompted the Bus and Taxi Owners Association of Zambia to urge bus drivers to follow stipulated regulations and avoid parking in undesignated areas.

However, commenting on the concerns over parking space shortages at some bus stations in an interview with the Zambian Business Times – ZBT, BTOAZ Chairperson Sydney Chewe called for investment in modern bus stations to address the parking challenges.

He suggested that institutions such as the National Pension Scheme Authority (NAPSA) could provide funding for the construction of modern facilities. Observing that improved bus stations would provide adequate parking space and help bring greater organization to public transport operations Chewe, however, urged bus drivers to continue observing existing regulations and avoid parking in areas that have not been designated for buses.

“Bus drivers should comply with the rules to help maintain order at bus stations, they could temporarily park in available spaces near the railway line while waiting for queues at bus stations to ease.” He said the use of available space could help reduce pressure at bus stations, particularly in areas where parking capacity is limited.
