A 29-year-old Chipangali ward Councillor under the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity NRPUP has been detained by police in Chipata over allegations of forgery and uttering a false document in a case linked to the August 2026 general elections.

Innocent Daka, of Nkoto Village in Chipangali District is a Councillor for Chipangali Ward under the Chipangali East Constituency.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba says the offence occurred on 22 May 2026 at Chipangali District Council, where Daka allegedly presented a forged Grade 12 Certificate to the Returning Officer at the Chipangali nomination centre ahead of the elections held on 13 August 2026.

The matter was officially reported on 10 September 2026 at 08:00 hours at Chipata Central Police Station, which has been investigating the case.

Investigations led to the apprehension of the suspect and the recovery of the forged Grade 12 Certificate bearing the names of Innocent Daka, with an examination number belonging to Anoya Zulu Secondary School.

Further investigations revealed that the examination number in question belongs to Emmanuel Phiri and not Innocent Daka.

The suspect has been detained in police custody pending further investigations, while the recovered forged certificate has been kept as an exhibit.
