THE Centre for Reproductive Health and Education (CRHE) has called on the government to demonstrate bold leadership and genuine commitment to accountability, transparency, and systemic reform in the healthcare sector.
This follows allegations of corruption and mismanagement of public health resources at the Ministry of Health by the U.S. government, which has since withdrawn $50 million in aid.
CRHE executive director Amos Mwale has demanded that the government immediately release the audit findings of the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Authority (ZAMMSA), which were instituted earlier this year after the disappearance of containers containing medical supplies later discovered in a warehouse in Lusaka’s Matero area.
“This transparency is crucial in building trust and ensuring that the public is aware of the extent of the problem. By making the audit findings public, the Zambian government will be demonstrating its commitment to accountability and openness,” Mr Mwale said.
He added that the government must investigate and prosecute high-ranking officials allegedly involved in the theft of medicines.

“This is essential in ensuring that those responsible for the corruption are held accountable and that the rule of law is upheld. The investigation and prosecution process should be thorough, transparent, and impartial,” he said.
Mr Mwale further stated that government should strengthen supply chain management systems and enhance coordination with donor partners.
He also urged President Hakainde Hichilema to take decisive action to address the alleged corruption, saying bold leadership is critical in such times.
“By taking decisive action, the President can demonstrate his commitment to protecting public resources and promoting the health and well-being of Zambians,” Mr Mwale said.
He added that CRHE is committed to working with the government, donors, and other stakeholders to promote reforms and ensure that healthcare resources are used effectively.
