The Ethiopian community in Zambia has celebrated Ashenda 2026, a vibrant cultural festival showcasing the rich heritage of the Tigray people while highlighting the important role of women and young people in preserving and promoting tradition.
The celebration brought together members of the Ethiopian community and invited guests for a display of traditional music, dance and cultural attire, reflecting the values and identity that Ashenda has upheld for generations.
Speaking as Guest of Honour, Lusaka Chamber of Commerce President Alexander Lawrence says Ashenda should be viewed as more than a cultural celebration, describing it as a platform that can promote entrepreneurship, cultural tourism, investment and youth empowerment.
Mr Lawrence encouraged young people to embrace their cultural heritage and use their creativity and talents to establish sustainable enterprises. He also called on communities, government and the private sector to work together in transforming culture into economic opportunities that can benefit future generations.
Ashenda is an annual festival celebrated primarily by women and girls, providing a platform for cultural expression, unity and the preservation of Ethiopian traditions.
