THE Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed former Chipolopolo midfielder Perry Mutapa as head coach of the Under-20 Men’s National Team.

FAZ said Mutapa, who is also head coach of Super League side Green Eagles, will replace Boyd Mulwanda.

Mutapa’s technical bench will include Sipho Mumbi as first assistant, Lameck Banda as second assistant, and Masautso Tembo as strikers’ coach.

“Until recently, Mutapa was an assistant coach at the Senior Men’s National Team that participated at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco,” FAZ said in a statement.

FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the immediate task for the new bench is to prepare for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification tournament in Mauritius.

“In an effort to regenerate the focus for our Under-20 boys’ national team, we have decided to appoint a new bench to align with the assignments coming ahead,” Chakatazya said.

“We have our focus on the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations zonal qualifier which will take place in Mauritius from Sept. 18-27.”

Chakatazya said FAZ has tasked the new technical team to qualify the team for the AFCON and subsequently for the FIFA World Cup.

“Our Under-20 project has been on the wane since the 2017 side that won the AFCON and reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in South Korea,” he said.
