FIRST KNOWN BRITON KILLED FIGHTING FOR RUSSIA IN UKRAINE
Bradley Townsend, a 33-year-old former fisherman from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, is believed to be the first British citizen killed while fighting for Russia during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Townsend reportedly died during a Russian assault operation near Lyman in the Donetsk region on June 10 after being struck by an FPV drone. Britain’s Foreign Office says it is aware of the reports and is supporting his family.
At the beginning of the year, Townsend told relatives he was travelling to Romania. By April, he was appearing in a Russian recruitment video alongside British pro-Russian fighters Ben Stimson and Aiden Minnis. Stimson had previously been imprisoned in Britain after joining Russian-backed forces in occupied Donbas.
Townsend had no known military experience. He described himself as an ordinary working-class Yorkshireman and said his fascination with Russia’s separatist movement began in 2014. Before deploying, he acknowledged that he might never return home and insisted that joining Russia’s invading forces was his own decision.
This is also a warning about the reach of Russian propaganda. It persuaded a man with no connection to Ukraine to cross Europe and participate in the invasion of a sovereign country.
Ukraine did not bring Bradley Townsend to the Donetsk battlefield. Russian recruitment placed him there—and his own decision completed the journey.
