Former Copperbelt Police Chief Yuyi Faces Fraudulent Metals Dealing Charge

Former Copperbelt Police Commissioner Mwala Yuyi is now facing a charge of fraudulently dealing in metals, after the initial charge of theft by public servant was dropped.

His lawyer, Siisii Mulele, says the change follows the failure by police to establish the initial charge against his client.

On July 30, 2026, Mr. Yuyi was arrested alongside five others in connection with the alleged theft of 436 copper cathodes valued at approximately US$448,000, which were recovered in Mufulira District.

The other accused persons are Magistrate Edward Banda, police officers Patrick Muti and Boniface Nchimunya, and court clerk Obrian Chipunza, all from Mufulira.

The matter is expected to come before the courts today.
