NAIS- Government has flagged off a mass vaccination campaign of domestic animals against Anthrax, targeting 20,000 animals in three districts of Muchinga Province.

Speaking at the launch in Mpika, the epicenter of the outbreak, District Commissioner David Siame stressed government’s commitment to containing the disease. He said the prompt release of vaccines and resources demonstrates government’s resolve to safeguard lives and protect gains made in the livestock sector.

Mr. Siame noted that the Anthrax outbreak poses a serious threat to the national objective of increasing the cattle population to 7 million and achieving US$1 billion in beef exports.

At the same event, Provincial Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator Dr. Nasilele Kalonga said no domestic animals have been affected by Anthrax so far. She assured residents of Mpika, Shiwang’andu, and Lavushimanda districts that beef, pork, mutton, and goat meat remain safe for consumption.

Dr. Kalonga appealed to farmers in targeted areas to avail their animals for vaccination to ensure the campaign’s success.
