Government Orders Contingency Plans Ahead of Anticipated El Niño

The Northern Part of the Country is expected to receive above normal to normal rainfall...

The Northern Part of the Country is expected to receive above normal to normal rainfall from October 2026 to February 2027.

Secretary to Cabinet PATRICK KANGWA says this will include Districts in Northern, Luapula and Muchinga Provinces, as rain activity continues normally until April.

Mr. KANGWA says the Copperbelt, Central, and Eastern, and Southern Part of North Western Provinces will receive normal to above normal rainfall early in the season, before conditions turn dryer in the latter part of the season.

He was speaking during the launch of the 2026/2027 seasonal weather forecast in Lusaka.

Mr. KANGWA says Southern and Lusaka Provinces will be government’s areas of concern as the provinces will receive below normal rainfall throughout the season.

Mr. KANGWA has since directed all Permanent Secretaries to immediately put contingency plans into effect in readiness for the farming season.

He says the weather outlook should be taken serious as the country learnt hard lessons from the 2023/2024 drought.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary DOUTY CHIBAMBA said safeguarding farmers against climate shocks requires concerted efforts.

Dr. CHIBAMBA said it is important to translate the weather insights into localized solutions.

And United Nations Development Programme UNDP Resident Representative JAMES WAKIAGA said building climate resilience is a priority for UNDP.
