Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary Maambo Haamaundu says government will begin preparations for the second cohort of the Zambia National Service (ZNS) voluntary training programme once Cabinet is fully established.

The first cohort of 1,129 youths graduated in May this year after completing six months of training at ZNS Skills Training Centres in Katete, Kitwe, and Kasama.

Launched in September 2025, the programme combines basic military training and national values with practical skills in tailoring and design, mechanics, electrical work, and agriculture.

Among the beneficiaries is 27‑year‑old Mangani Mbewe of Lusaka’s Chelstone township, who has successfully turned his acquired skills into a livelihood. After completing the training, Mbewe established a hardware business that has since grown to employ four people.
