Muungushi University Students Union president David Banda has commended President Hakainde Hichilema for facilitating the construction of 19,000 student bed spaces through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

Mr Banda said the construction of the 19,000 bed spaces at Mulungushi University demonstrated growing investor confidence in Zambia, which he attributed to President Hichilema’s leadership.

He also cited the construction of a police post outside the university as an example of improved relations between students and law enforcement officers.

Mr Banda said the New Dawn administration had also ensured that student meal allowances were disbursed on time, promoting students’ welfare and concentration on their studies.

“Back then we could have been very upset as students if you built a police post near the university because we didn’t have a good relationship with the police, but today we are happy under the New Dawn Government. The police are our cousins; we collaborate and work together,” he said.

He attributed the improved relationship to efforts to address students’ concerns peacefully, without resorting to riots.

And Mr Banda said the constitutional amendment had created opportunities for young people to participate in national decision-making through parliamentary representation.

He said young people had for a long time been used as instruments of political violence during election campaigns, but the new arrangement had demonstrated that they could take up leadership responsibilities.

And Copperbelt University Students Union president and National Council of Students Unions vice-chairperson Given Chipeyo challenged opposition political parties to focus their debates on the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Mr Chipeyo said national development priorities, including producing three million tonnes of copper, one million tonnes of sugar and 10 million tonnes of maize, generating 10,000 megawatts of electricity and attracting five million tourists, should form part of the national debate.

He praised President Hichilema’s leadership and urged the opposition to allow the Government to implement its programmes, while cautioning the media against promoting what he described as propaganda.
