By Justine Akakulubelwa

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has challenged leaders in the Great Lakes Region to shift their focus from resolving conflicts to preventing them through economic growth and job creation.

President HICHILEMA says poverty, hunger and limited economic opportunities are among the underlying causes of instability in the region.

He says the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region –ICGLR- must move beyond two decades of routine meetings and deliver practical solutions to insecurity.

Speaking at the 20th Ordinary Session of the ICGLR Regional Inter-Ministerial Committee in Lusaka today, President HICHILEMA called for stronger regional investment partnerships to reduce excessive dependence on Western capital.

He also urged member states to prioritise intra-regional food trade, noting that hunger could fuel conflict and displacement.

President HICHILEMA further called for a non-stop border policy to allow goods and services to move across regional borders 24 hours a day.

He said transport corridors should be transformed into economic corridors that drive production, investment, energy development and regional trade.

The President also challenged member states to formalise mining activities, safeguard miners’ lives and prevent environmental damage that could undermine regional stability.
