Police Ig Orders Arrests, Review of Mongu Operation

The Zambia Police Service has ordered the arrest of individuals involved in recent incidents of political violence reported in Shibuyunji, Livingstone and Luampa districts following disturbances experienced on August 4 and 5 in parts of Western Province as the country prepares for the August 13, 2026 General Election.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba says the Service strongly condemns all forms of political violence, describing such acts as a threat to Zambia’s democratic process.

He says police remain committed to maintaining law and order before, during and after the elections.

Mr. Musamba says the Police Service fully supports President Hakainde Hichilema’s position that violence, intimidation and lawlessness by any political party, candidate or supporter will not be tolerated. He adds that the law will be applied fairly and impartially regardless of political affiliation.

The Inspector General has since directed commanding officers in the affected districts to ensure that all those involved in the violent incidents are apprehended and brought before the courts without delay. He warns that political affiliation will not shield anyone from criminal prosecution and that offenders will face the full force of the law.

Meanwhile, Mr. Musamba has ordered a comprehensive review of the police crowd control and public order management operation conducted in Mongu and Kalabo districts during a Tonse-Pamodzi Alliance campaign rally where tear smoke was discharged.

He says the review will assess whether the operation complied with legal requirements and professional policing standards, while also examining the conduct of some political supporters towards police officers.

The Police Chief has also dismissed social media reports alleging that a person died during the Mongu incident, stating that no death was recorded in connection with the operation.
