Police Shoot Dead Three Suspected Robbers in Sinda, Katete

Police have shot dead three suspected robbers in Sinda and Katete districts...

By Christopher Miti

Police have shot dead three suspected robbers in Sinda and Katete districts in Eastern Province following an operation to stop a planned robbery targeting a businessman in Sinda.

Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer ROBERTSON MWEEMBA says the operation was conducted yesterday after police received intelligence from an informant that four suspected robbers, armed with unknown weapons, were planning to attack the businessman.

Mr. MWEEMBA says the anti-robbery squad identified the targeted businessman and began investigations.

He says at around 18:30 hours, the four suspects arrived on two motorbikes and parked near the businessman’s shop as they waited to stage the robbery.

Mr. MWEEMBA says police officers challenged the suspects, but one of them produced an AK-47 rifle and aimed it at the officers, who then opened fire.

He says two suspects were fatally wounded, while the other two fled on the second motorbike. One of the fleeing suspects was later apprehended after falling off the motorbike.

Mr. MWEEMBA says the apprehended suspect told police that his accomplice had gone to visit his girlfriend near Katete Airstrip, prompting officers to pursue him.

He says the suspect who was assisting police in the pursuit also attempted to escape and was shot during the operation.

Mr. MWEEMBA says all three suspects died upon arrival at Chipata Central Hospital, where their bodies have been deposited in the mortuary. The fourth suspect remains at large.

He says the suspects were on the police wanted list in connection with two aggravated robberies: one in the Sunnydale area of Lundazi District on October 1, and another at Kaulu Village in Petauke District.

Mr. MWEEMBA says police have recovered an AK-47 rifle with seven rounds of ammunition and an unregistered motorbike.
