Samukonga Calls for Leadership Change in Zambia Athletics

Olympian Muzala Samukonga has called for leadership change and greater support for athletes in the development of athletics in Zambia.

Samukonga has made the call in a statement posted on his official Facebook page, in which he has criticised the current leadership of the Zambia Athletics Association, led by Bernard Bwalya.

He has alleged that athletes continue to meet their own expenses when representing Zambia, including airfares, saying such costs should be covered by government through the athletics association.

Samukonga has further questioned the current administration’s record on athlete welfare and development, claiming that there has been no clear plan to advance athletics in the country.

He has since called on the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and other stakeholders to intervene and ensure that the sport is led by officials who can mobilise resources, account for them and prioritise athletes.

The Olympic medallist says failure to address these challenges will continue to put Zambia’s athletics talent at risk.

Meanwhile, Zambia Athletics is yet to respond to these concerns raised.
