GOVERNMENT says the delays in repairing the damaged roof at the National Heroes Stadium were due to ongoing insurance processes, as ZISC General Insurance finally paid over K2.6 million for rehabilitation works.

Speaking during a cheque handover in Lusaka yesterday, Youth, Sport and Arts Minister Elvis Nkandu said public concerns over the delayed opening of the sports facility needed clarification.

“There has been a perception that government has delayed in fixing the roof, but the facility is insured and the works depended on the conclusion of the insurance process,” Nkandu said.

The Minister noted that while the pitch has already been upgraded with a modern hybrid turf, the damaged roof remains a key obstacle preventing the stadium from operating.

He explained that certain sections of the facility cannot be utilized until the roof is repaired.

Meanwhile, ZISC General Insurance managing director Trevor Njenganjenga said the payment of K2,616,377.32 will cover both material and installation costs for the repairs.

Njenganjenga said the payout follows damage caused by strong winds that affected sections of the roof, adding that the funds have already been transferred to the ministry to facilitate works.

“This is not just a payment, but a demonstration of our commitment to safeguarding national infrastructure,” he said.

Government said once the rehabilitation works are done, the National Heroes Stadium will return to full operation and once again host football matches and national events before September.
