German premium carmaker, BMW, has announced a global recall affecting 744,234 vehicles over potential fire hazards, the COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission has revealed.
Germany’s Motor Vehicle Authority, KBA, said on its website that 337,374 vehicles of the i7, i5, 5 Series, 7 Series and M5 models manufactured between 2022 and 2025 are potentially affected.
KBA warned that improper installation of the cockpit wiring harness could damage cables when replacing the microfilter and this may result in a short circuit and increase the risk of fire.
The COMESA Competition and Consumer Commission said it had also become aware that abrasion-related deposits may accumulate in the RWT starter relay.
It stated that this could lead to increased contact resistance and potentially cause a short circuit, thereby increasing the risk of fire.
“CCCC is aware that consumers in several COMESA Member States import the affected models from different parts of the world, and as a result, some of the recalled vehicles may be present within the COMESA region,” it stated.
COMESA has advised consumers to verify whether their vehicles are affected by entering the full 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) in the recall checker.
Owners of affected vehicles have been advised to visit their nearest authorized BMW workshop to have the engine starter motor replaced.
