Swala Pilu calls for stronger mental health support in police service

By Francis Maingaila ♥️

Lusaka, Zambia24 — September 16, 2026 — Swala Pilu has called for stronger mental health and suicide-prevention services within the Zambia Police Service following the reported death of a police superintendent at Police Headquarters.

The officer reportedly died by suicide at about 20:45 hours yesterday after locking himself in his office and using a pistol, according to a statement attributed to Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Timothy Malumo.

Swala Pilu Executive Director Mary Kufanga said the incident should prompt the Police Command to strengthen confidential counselling and mental health support for officers.

“We therefore appeal to the Zambia Police Command to strengthen confidential counselling and mental health support services within police departments and formations,” Ms Kufanga said.

She said officers should have safe spaces to discuss personal and professional challenges and seek professional help without fear of being judged or unfairly treated.

Ms Kufanga said the circumstances surrounding the death should also prompt reflection on whether there were opportunities to identify and support the officer before the tragedy.

“Police officers undergo training to protect and serve the people of Zambia. They, too, need protection and support when they are experiencing emotional, psychological, family, financial or other personal challenges,” she said.

She said recent incidents involving police officers and domestic disputes had further highlighted the need for accessible counselling and conflict-resolution services within the police service.

Ms Kufanga said Swala Pilu was ready to work with the Zambia Police Service, Government, civil society organisations and churches to strengthen mental health and suicide-prevention programmes.

She also urged members of the public to support colleagues, friends and family members facing difficulties.

“Talking about your problems is not a sign of failure; asking for help is a courageous step towards healing and starting afresh,” Ms Kufanga said.

She urged churches and Christians across the country to continue praying for families and people facing emotional and mental health challenges.

“Suicide is preventable. Let us speak, listen, support and save lives,” she said.
