United Capital Fertiliser plans to invest 1.5 billion dollars in the construction of a Urea and Ammonia fertiliser plant in Zambia.

The company is already operating a 650-million-dollar Urea plant and says it has become a net exporter of Urea in the Southern African region.

The planned investment was announced during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between United Capital Fertiliser and Copperbelt University for the construction of a Chemical Engineering Laboratory at the university.

Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for Finance and Economic Development SIAZONGA SIAKALENGE says increased local fertiliser production has contributed to greater stability of the Kwacha.

Dr. SIAKALENGE says Zambia’s previous dependence on imported fertiliser was among the factors that contributed to fluctuations in the local currency.

And United Capital Fertiliser Vice Chairperson MARGARET MUDENDA says Zambia should target significant economic growth over the next 15 years under the Grow Zambia Agenda.

Ms. MUDENDA says the country has abundant natural resources which, if effectively harnessed, can support economic transformation.

Education Permanent Secretary for Education Services KELVIN MAMBWE says the planned Chemical Engineering Laboratory at CBU fits into Government’s Grow Zambia Agenda by developing practical and innovative skills.

And CBU Vice Chancellor PROFESSOR IMASIKU NYAMBE says the laboratory will enable students to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, while appealing for more partnerships to support the construction of student hostels and lecture theaters.
