University of Zambia (UNZA) students have launched a fundraising campaign ahead of President Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration ceremony, as a gesture of appreciation for what they describe as improvements made at the university under his administration.
Speaking in an interview with the Lusaka Star, UNZASU Finance Secretary Amos Mwale said the initiative is aimed at showing appreciation to the President for his contribution to the university and its students.
Mr. Mwale said UNZA is among the institutions that have benefited from government support over the past five years.
“Hostels that remained unrenovated for years have been worked on, creating more accommodation space for students,” he said.
Mr. Mwale said students previously struggled to pay registration fees, but that the situation has become easier under the current government.
He added that the government has also addressed outstanding payments owed to some lecturers who retired without receiving their benefits.
“The fundraising initiative is a small way of appreciating the President for what he has done for the university,” he said.
Mr. Mwale said the initiative is voluntary and students are not being forced to contribute.
Meanwhile, UNZA student Soggie Simbule described the fundraising initiative as a way of celebrating the President for his contribution to students.
“We the students are so happy and excited because this means a lot to us,” Simbule said.
He said voting for President Hichilema was also another way students showed appreciation for his leadership.
Simbule has since encouraged students who are willing to contribute to participate in the fundraising initiative, saying it would demonstrate their appreciation for the President.
“The fundraising campaign remains open to students who wish to contribute ahead of the inauguration ceremony,” he said.
