UPND Accuses UN Rapporteur of One-Sided Assessment

By Sharon Siame

The UPND has rejected claims by United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, GINA ROMERO that Zambia’s democratic and human rights environment has deteriorated following the general election.

Addressing journalists in Lusaka today, UPND Chairperson for Legal and Constitutional Affairs JACK MWIIMBU said the party has reviewed Ms. ROMERO’s remarks and found them inaccurate, one-sided and lacking sufficient evidence.

Mr. MWIIMBU said the Special Rapporteur has exceeded her mandate by relying on unverified reports, drawing broad conclusions about the electoral process and failing to give the Zambian Government an adequate opportunity to respond to the allegations.

He said arrests and prosecutions recorded after the elections, including cases involving treason charges, were conducted in accordance with Zambian law and due process.

Mr. MWIIMBU said the charges are legitimate and not politically motivated.

He added that Government authorities acted within their constitutional responsibility to safeguard national security and maintain public order during the post-election period.

Mr. MWIIMBU also referred to observations by the Southern African Development Community -SADC, which described the post-election environment as largely peaceful and an improvement on conditions observed during the 2021 elections.

Meanwhile, Mr. MWIIMBU said the UPND will petition the UN Special Procedures Coordinating Committee to review the Special Rapporteur’s conduct under the body’s internal procedures governing working methods and alleged misconduct.

He also called on the Government to engage UN Resident Coordinator BEATRICE MUTALI over what he described as the need to maintain the United Nations’ neutrality in electoral matters.
