Coach Wedson Nyirenda is backing coaches Edward Mutapa and Chisi Mbweto to maintain the momentum from last season’s successful group stage continental run in the 2026/2027 CAF interclub campaign, which kicks off this weekend.

Mutapa will be aiming for back-to-back group stage qualifications in the CAF Champions League as Power Dynamos begin their quest with a preliminary stage tie against El Merreikh of Sudan, whom they face in the first leg away in Kigali, Rwanda this weekend.

Red Arrows, under coach Mbweto, will host RC Rogue from Madagascar in their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary stage first leg match this Saturday at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, as they aim for their first appearance in the continental group stage.

Arrows are picking up the mantle from Zesco United, who qualified to the 2025/2026 CAF Confederation Cup group stages.

Nyirenda said all football fans should support Power and Arrows during their international assignments and attend both teams’ continental home matches.

“I believe Power Dynamos and Red Arrows understand the significance of the respective competitions. They know what comes with going far in both competitions. We lost our two places in continental competitions because of poor showing. And our two envoys have the chance and ability to redeem us,” Nyirenda said.

Nyirenda believes the two clubs are led by capable coaches who have what it takes to guide the teams beyond the group stages.

He urged Mutapa and Mbweto to consolidate on the progress they made at the previous edition.

“I have so much confidence in the two coaches and their benches. I believe they have the ability to lead our envoys beyond the group stages. The platform is theirs. It was not handed to them for free.

“They showed all of us that they are the best at the moment and deserve to put on the green jacket for the nation and lead us to glory. Let them start high, consolidate and progress from where they ended in the last edition,” he said.

Nyirenda reminded players not to underrate their opponents.

“To the Zambian people, I would like to urge them to support our envoys to the end. When it comes to Continental football, all of us should be putting our thumbs down and standing up for the envoys.

“We all are looking for a common thing which is called success for Zambian football,” Nyirenda said.

“To the players, these competitions demand hard work, discipline and the willingness to go the extra mile for the badge. You are not only doing it for your clubs but the country at large. We believe in our envoys and can only wish them success.”
