WONDERFUL Group of Companies has launched a marathon, with running enthusiasts expected to turn up on May 30 for the race aimed at promoting the welfare of the girl child.

The marathon, which will be held under the theme For the Girl Child. For the Woman. For Zambia, was unveiled at an event graced by Minister of Sport, Youth and Arts, Elvis Nkandu.

In his speech, Mr. Nkandu described the marathon as a platform for advocacy and inclusion.

“This initiative demonstrates how sport can be used as platform for advocacy and also for inclusion, obviously it can also be looked at as a national development [tool],” Mr Nkandu said, “This Marathon is not merely about physical endurance, it is also about taking collective responsibility, empowerment and shaping the future of our county, about.”

“As we launch the Wonderful Marathon, we do so with confidence that the leadership and associations represented in this room will help guide this platform toward continuity and impact,” Mr. Yaochi said in a speech read by his deputy, Roy Mwamba.

Speaking earlier, Recheal Tanga, head of the marathon, described the event as the beginning of a movement.

“We chose this theme deliberately, to define where we are going and as a decision — that our next chapter must carry greater balance, greater intention and greater responsibility,” Ms. Tanga said.

Lusaka Fitness Squad (LFS) President Katai Chola described the marathon as a movement that will celebrate the potential of the Zambian girl child and women.

“This marathon is a movement that celebrate the strength, resilience, potential for the Zambian girl child…running has always symbolized progress, every stride forward is a step forward for a brighter future,” he said.

Others who spoke earlier include Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) Brian Bwembya, and Zambia Athletics (ZA) Major Bernard Bwalya, who hailed the initiative.
