By Masauso Mkwayaya Zambia has been elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2027-2029 term, marking a significant achievement in the country’s multilateral diplomacy. In a statement issued to ZNBC News, Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe said Zambia was elected by the United Nations General Assembly during its ongoing 81st Session at the UN Headquarters in New York, United States of America. Mr. Haimbe said the election presents an opportunity for Zambia to contribute to the global human rights agenda, strengthen international cooperation and advance the promotion of human dignity, equality, justice, democracy and the rule of law. He said Zambia’s membership is anchored on the conviction that respect for human rights, good governance and the rule of law are essential pillars for sustainable development and lasting peace. Mr. Haimbe added that this commitment is reflected in a number of national reforms and policies, including the abolition of the death penalty, strengthened protection frameworks for women, children and persons with disabilities, as well as expanded access to education and social support programmes. He said Zambia’s election to the Council also reinforces President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision under the Grow Zambia Agenda, which places people at the centre of national development. During its tenure, Zambia intends to promote constructive dialogue, cooperation and consensus among member states in a bid to contribute to a more effective, inclusive and responsive Human Rights Council. Mr. Haimbe said Zambia will further champion the rights of women, children and persons with disabilities, advance the right to development, and strengthen the link between human rights, climate resilience and sustainable development. He added that membership of the Council presents an opportunity for Zambia to strengthen human rights protection domestically while contributing to a Council that responds more effectively to the needs of all countries, particularly developing nations. Mr. Haimbe thanked United Nations member states for supporting Zambia’s candidature and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to working with the international community to promote dignity, equality, justice and respect for human rights.
