Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, Maambo Haamaundu, has called on Zambia and Mozambique to fight organized transnational crimes along their shared border.

Haamaundu stated that poaching, irregular migration, terrorism, and cybercrimes have become prevalent in both countries and must be countered through concerted efforts.

Speaking during the official opening of the Ministerial Meeting of the 14th Session of the Mozambique-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security, held in the Mozambican capital, Maputo, on Friday, Haamaundu tasked senior defence and security officials from both nations with tackling these security threats.

“I have no doubt that you will deliberate on these transnational organized crimes and formulate strategies to combat them. We need to effectively carry out the mandate given to us by Their Excellencies President Daniel Francisco Chapo of Mozambique and President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia,” he said.

The Permanent Secretary added that Mozambique was a unique strategic partner to Zambia regarding trade facilitation, defence, and security.

Haamaundu emphasized that Zambia remains determined to strengthen its collaboration with Mozambique across multiple sectors.

Meanwhile, Mozambique’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Defence, Casimiro Augusto Muieo, stated that President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election was a result of his strong record during his first term in office.

Muieo congratulated the Zambian people on re-electing President Hichilema, stating that the electoral victory demonstrates the public’s confidence in his leadership.

“The 14th Session of the Mozambique-Zambia Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security is being held at a time when Mozambique is celebrating the anniversary of the signing of the Lusaka Accord, which paved the way for the country’s independence from Portugal,” he said.

Muieo noted that the signing of the agreement in Lusaka on September 7, 1974 was a monumental step that led to the end of colonial rule the following year.

He expressed gratitude to Zambia for playing a pivotal role in pushing for Mozambique’s independence by hosting peace talks between liberation movements and the Portuguese colonial authorities.

The Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) is expected to conclude its proceedings this afternoon.
