Zambians Urged to Check US Visa Rules Before Travel

By Arnold Tutu

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has reminded Zambians of United States travel restrictions affecting holders of certain visa categories, which took effect on January 1, 2026.

The restrictions suspend entry into the United States for Zambian nationals travelling on immigrant visas and certain non-immigrant visas, including those for business, tourism, academic studies, vocational training and exchange programmes.

The affected non-immigrant visa categories are B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M and J.

The Ministry says other non-immigrant visas issued to Zambian nationals may also have reduced validity periods, where permitted by law.

However, the restrictions provide exceptions for certain groups, including lawful permanent residents of the United States, dual nationals travelling on passports from countries not covered by the measures, and some official and diplomatic travellers.

Other exceptions and individual waivers may also apply.

The Ministry has advised Zambians planning to travel to the United States to check the requirements with the US Embassy in Zambia before making travel arrangements or paying visa fees.

It says Government will continue engaging the relevant authorities through diplomatic channels on the matter.

This is according to a public notice issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Lusaka today.
