TRYNESS TEMBO

Lusaka

POULTRY Association of Zambia (PAZ) expects a four percent growth for the sector with the industry poised to supply over 78 million trays of eggs, up from 75 million last year.

The anticipated increase, to be driven largely by small- and medium-scale producers, has been attributed to a stable input supply and prices, as well as stability in the Kwacha.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Egg Day 2026 on Friday, PAZ national chairperson Mathew Ngosa said the sector continues to attract investment to meet demand in both the local and export markets.

“This investment in the value chain will help the industry contribute to Zambia’s current growth agenda, focusing on the growth of the agriculture and livestock sectors,” he said.

However, Mr Ngosa noted that farmers continue to operate in an increasingly challenging environment characterised by high input costs, feed price fluctuations, disease risks, high transport costs, and changing consumer purchasing power.

He said feed remains one of the largest operational costs in commercial poultry production, with changes in prices for maize, soya, premixes, amino acids, energy and transportation having a direct impact on the cost of producing eggs.

Mr Ngosa said this is why PAZ continues to advocate for a stable, competitive and sustainable poultry feed industry.

“We need stronger collaboration among farmers, feed manufacturers, grain producers, the Government, financial institutions, researchers and other stakeholders,” he said.

“Our objective must be to ensure that farmers have access to quality feed at competitive prices while consumers continue to access affordable eggs.”

Mr Ngosa said despite challenges, farmers continue to produce and supply eggs at affordable rates to the majority of citizens.

“I thank all layer farmers for your resilience, dedication and contribution to feeding our nation,” he said.

Mr Ngosa noted that the industry holds numerous opportunities, especially for young people, who can participate through feed distribution, egg production and marketing, transportation and equipment supply.

He encouraged the youth to view poultry farming not merely as traditional farming, but as a viable commercial agribusiness opportunity.

Mr Ngosa said with the right skills, technology, financing and market linkages, the poultry sector can create sustainable businesses and employment opportunities. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
