Zambia police on Thursday recorded warn and caution statements from opposition presidential candidate, Brian Mundubile, and his running mate, Makebi Zulu, in connection with an alleged treason offence.
The two were quizzed by investigators and remained in custody, police spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi said in a statement.
Police said the investigation related to an alleged offence of treason contrary to Section 43(1) of Zambia’s Penal Code, Chapter 87.
“The Zambia Police Service wishes to confirm that warn and caution statements have been recorded from Mr. Brian Mundubile and Mr. Makebi Zulu in connection with an alleged offence of treason,” Chilabi said.
Police did not provide details of the allegations against the two.
“The Zambia Police Service will provide further information on the circumstances of the matter as investigations progress,” Chilabi said.
Mundubile was a presidential candidate in Zambia’s Aug. 13 election, while Zulu served as his running mate.
