Security guard who refused to give up on journalism dream

FOR many young people, a security guard’s uniform is often seen as a sign that life has stalled. But for Steward Mpundu Simutowe, it became the outfit he wore while building the future he wanted.
Today, the young man from Mkushi District is known for interviewing leaders and discussing important national issues on radio, but a few years ago, he was spending his nights guarding buildings in Ndola.
Life was not easy for Simutowe.
Born in Kabufumu Village in Mkushi in 1999, he grew up in a humble family where his parents worked hard as farmers and small business people to put food on the table and educate their children.
Like many young people, finishing school did not automatically open doors for him.
After completing Grade 12, Simutowe continued volunteering at community radio stations because he loved journalism.
However, passion alone could not pay bills.
To survive, he took up a job as a security guard at Firenta Security Company between 2019 and 2021.
Many people would have accepted that as their final destination, but Simutowe refused to give up on his dream.
During the day, he attended classes and volunteered at radio stations while in the night, he wore a security uniform and guarded premises.
Instead of complaining about his situation, he used every opportunity to learn.
“Security work taught me patience, discipline and how to observe people. Those are the same skills I use today as a journalist,” said Simutowe.
His determination eventually paid off.
After years of studying and volunteering, he completed a Diploma in Journalism from Copperstone University in 2023.
Today, he works at Radio Chimwemwe where he hosts the popular programme Know Your Leader, a platform where citizens get to hear directly from people seeking public office.
He also founded Youth Power, a programme that encourages young people to participate in leadership and national development.
His hard work has not gone unnoticed as Radio Chimwemwe named him Most Reliable Employee in both 2023 and 2024.
“No matter where you start from, never stop moving towards your dream. A job is not the end of your story. It can be the beginning,” he said.
