The United States Government has reopened a financing window for Zambia’s private sector, allowing businesses to access credit and insurance backed by the U.S. Export-Import Bank, EXIM Bank, for short-term transactions.
The decision follows a revision of EXIM Bank’s Country Limitation Schedule, which took effect on July 30, 2026.
The change allows eligible Zambian businesses importing American goods, equipment and technology to access financial support backed by the U.S. Government.
The move is expected to support trade between Zambia and the United States and improve access to financing for businesses seeking American machinery, technology and other capital goods.

According to the revised Country Limitation Schedule, private sector risk cover is available under EXIM Bank’s short-term multi-buyer and single-buyer insurance programmes.
However, discretionary credit limits have been withdrawn, meaning applications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
EXIM Bank will determine the structure of each transaction and any additional information required from applicants.
Private sector risk cover is also available under the Working Capital Guarantee Programme, subject to EXIM Bank’s requirements.
Meanwhile, medium- and long-term public sector transactions remain subject to notification by the Ministry of Finance.
The Ministry must confirm that such transactions are of the highest priority and comply with International Monetary Fund and World Bank programme limits on non-concessional borrowing.
EXIM Bank says it can also consider financing arrangements that reduce or transfer country risk where other forms of support are unavailable.
