Eleven people have been arrested at the National Heroes’ Stadium in Lusaka after a false social media claim sparked an unlawful gathering.

Matero Police Station received a report at about 07:30 hours yesterday that a large crowd had gathered at Gate One of the stadium.

Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects were caught compiling a list at the scene.

Preliminary investigations suggest the crowd was drawn there by a deceptive online post from a commentator who claimed money would be distributed at the stadium. The post allegedly led many to believe they would each receive cash.

“Police officers engaged with the crowd and advised those present to disperse peacefully. When the crowd did not comply, officers dispersed it to maintain public order and ensure public safety,” Mr Chilabi said.

He added that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as necessary.

The Zambia Police Service has urged the public to be wary of disinformation on social media, especially messages promising money or other benefits.

Mr Chilabi said the situation at the stadium remained calm, with officers continuing to monitor the area.
