The victims and their colleagues had gone to mine sand when a portion of the unstable sand wall unexpectedly collapsed, trapping Mr Phiri and Mr Mbao underneath.
Another colleague, Daniel Zulu, immediately rushed to the nearby village to alert the victims’ parents.
By the time rescuers and family members arrived, the trapped men had been pulled from the rubble, though they were unconscious and displayed no apparent signs of life.
The three were rushed to Chisamba Rural Health Centre, where Mr Phiri and Mr Mbao were pronounced dead upon arrival, while Mr Mulenga was admitted and is currently receiving medical treatment for his injuries.
Police have since launched formal investigations into the tragic accident to establish the exact circumstances leading up to the structural collapse at the excavation site. https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
