Chiluba family thanks Hichilema for service to Zambia

THE family of late president Frederick Chiluba has thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for his service to the country and the support he has shown them over the years.
Speaking during Chiluba’s 15th memorial service yesterday, his daughter Huldah Chiluba, speaking on behalf of the entire Chiluba family, said they appreciated President Hichilema’s leadership and understood the challenges that come with governing a nation.
Huldah said President Hichilema had witnessed Zambia’s historic transition to multiparty democracy in 1991 and had contributed to the country’s economic reforms during that period.
“As one who has had the honour and responsibility of steering this great nation, you know firsthand the weight that accompanied my father’s ascent to Plot One in 1991. You witnessed that defining season in our nation’s history and, through your expertise and counsel, contributed to Zambia’s economic reforms at a critical time. For that, we remain grateful,” Huldah said.
The family said President Hichilema’s journey to State House had been that of perseverance and conviction, adding that leading a country was never an easy task.
“Through many trials, you remained focused on the vision before you, and today you carry the responsibility of leading this great nation. We recognize that such a calling is not an easy one, and we thank you for your service to Zambia,” she said.
The Chiluba family also expressed gratitude to President Hichilema and First Lady Mutinta Hichilema for standing with them during difficult moments, especially when former first lady Vera Chiluba faced health challenges.
According to the family, the kindness shown by the President and the First Lady had not gone unnoticed and had meant a great deal to them.
“May He reward your service to this nation and establish the work of your hands,” she said.
Meanwhile, President Hichilema said Chiluba would be remembered for championing workers’ rights during his days as a trade union leader and for his role in the country’s return to multiparty democracy.
In a speech read on his behalf by Vice President Mutale Nalumango, the Head of State said many Zambians remembered Chiluba as a fearless and visionary leader whose determination helped change the country’s political landscape.
“Dr Chiluba is remembered by many as a man whose determination to fight for the country’s return to multi-party democracy changed the political landscape of our country,” said President Hichilema.
