A couple has been detained in Monze District after allegedly being found with forged bank notes worth K150,000.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo confirmed that the suspects, a 28-year-old woman and her 50-year-old husband of Hilltop Township, were in custody as investigations continued.
The case was reported to police by ABSA Bank Monze Branch Manager Leonard Mwape, 42.
Earlier, the woman had approached an Airtel Money agent in the central business district intending to deposit K150,000 into her husband’s Airtel Money account.
The agent managed to deposit K70,000 but could not process the remaining amount due to insufficient float.

The woman subsequently proceeded to ABSA Bank to obtain additional float. It was during the transaction that the bank raised the alarm after examining the remaining cash.
Mr Namalongo said the notes, consisting of K500 denominations, were suspected to be counterfeit.
Police inspected the money before apprehending the woman. Officers later searched her residence but found no additional forged notes.
The couple is being investigated for possession of forged bank notes, contrary to Section 358 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
Mr Namalongo said investigations were ongoing and the public would be updated once they were concluded.
