Government has challenged aspects of the European Union Election Observation Mission’s final report on Zambia’s 13th August 2026 General Elections, arguing that some of its conclusions lack sufficient historical, institutional and security context.
In a statement , Information and Media Minister and Chief Government Spokesperson Elvis Nkandu says while Government appreciates the Mission’s acknowledgement of the competitive nature of the elections, efficient administration of polling and preparedness of the Electoral Commission of Zambia, it has concerns over some of the findings and recommendations.
Mr Nkandu has particularly questioned the report’s assessment of electoral and constitutional reforms undertaken in an election year, arguing that successive administrations, including those of former Presidents Kenneth Kaunda, Frederick Chiluba and Edgar Lungu, also implemented significant reforms during election years.
He has further disputed the Mission’s conclusion that the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation was overwhelmingly biased towards the incumbent, saying the assessment should have considered the broadcaster’s statutory mandate and historical coverage of presidential activities.
Government has also argued that the Mission’s assessment of security-related incidents during the electoral period may have been limited by its lack of access to intelligence and law enforcement information.
Mr Nkandu has, however, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to democratic governance, freedom of expression and continued engagement with the European Union and other stakeholders in strengthening the country’s electoral processes.
