Government has called for stronger partnerships to turn plastic waste into business opportunities while reducing pollution.

Green Economy and Environment Minister GILBERT SIAME says plastic waste can be recycled into useful products such as manufacturing inputs, construction materials and energy.

Dr. SIAME, however, says strategic partnerships are needed to connect waste collectors, processors and corporate buyers and prevent disruptions in the supply chain.

He said this during a Stakeholder Meeting on Plastic Waste Management in Lusaka, which brought together players in manufacturing, waste collection, sorting and recycling to discuss practical solutions.

Dr. SIAME urged local authorities to strengthen waste management systems and work with the private sector and communities to improve waste collection and sorting at source.

He said Government is committed to creating a favourable policy environment and expects the meeting to strengthen the implementation of Extended Producer Responsibility Regulations and reduce plastic pollution in the country.

Meanwhile, Zambia Environmental Management Agency –ZEMA- Director General JOEL KABIKA said partnerships could transform fragmented and high-risk waste management operations into profitable and well-coordinated businesses.
