By Cindy Mulomba

The Ministry of Green Economy and Environment is targeting investment in at least one million hectares of forestry plantations along the TAZARA Corridor.

Green Economy Minister GILBERT SIAME says the TAZARA Corridor presents a strategic opportunity for forestry investment due to its potential to support faster tree growth and facilitate the movement and export of timber products.

Dr. SIAME says Government has identified the forestry sector as one of the key contributors to the Grow Zambia Agenda.

He was speaking when he met members of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Lusaka.

Dr. SIAME said the investment is expected to expand forestry plantations and wood-processing industries, while creating opportunities for Zambian businesses and local communities.

Meanwhile, Chinese Chamber of Commerce President LI TIE has proposed partnerships between Zambia and Chinese research institutions to introduce faster-growing tree species and share expertise in restoring degraded land.

Mr. LI said fruit-tree production should also be promoted as part of the forestry agenda, as it can provide farmers with an income while supporting environmental conservation.

He said the Chamber is ready to work with Government to increase awareness among Chinese companies about investment opportunities, policies and procedures in the forestry sector.

And Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary DOUTY CHIBAMBA said the forestry sector has further potential for expansion, particularly through the establishment of out-grower schemes.

Dr. CHIBAMBA said the model would allow major investors to establish anchor plantations while sourcing timber from smaller local growers.
