JACK KALALA DEFENDS GOVERNMENT ACTION IN KABULONGA OPERATION
Former Special Assistant to late President LEVY MWANAWASA for Policy, Project Implementation and Monitoring JACK KALALA has questioned the Commonwealth’s position on what transpired in Zambia.
Mr. KALALA says the Government had a responsibility to act following the alleged recovery of weapons and other evidence from a house in Kabulonga.
He says it would have been irresponsible for Government to ignore what appeared to be a potential threat to national security and wait for the situation to escalate.
Mr. KALALA says although the reported loss of life is regrettable, Government has a duty to take lawful and proportionate measures to protect the lives and property of more than 20 million Zambians.
He added that the measures taken to protect national security are ultimately aimed at protecting citizens, their property and livelihoods.
In a statement, Mr. KALALA said those who criticise Government action should also consider the possible consequences of widespread violence and instability had the situation been allowed to deteriorate.
He however stressed that Zambia’s laws and institutions must be respected and that anyone accused of breaking the law should be investigated and prosecuted through established legal processes.
Mr. KALALA said suspects must equally be given an opportunity to defend themselves and have their legal rights respected.
He further commended Government for taking steps to safeguard the country.
