By Nyambe Nalishebo

Government says it is working more closely with local contractors to improve their technical and financial capacity and restore confidence in the sector.

Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Permanent Secretary, ALBERT MALAMA, says the move follows years of poor performance by some local firms, which have affected the reputation of the sector.

Speaking to ZNBC News, Professor MALAMA said the Ministry has identified selected local contractors to partner with under an ongoing capacity-building programme.

He said most local contractors face challenges in technical expertise and access to financing, which government is seeking to address.

Professor MALAMA said government is engaging banks to provide concessional financing to contractors.
