OVER 2.5 million people are expected to benefit from the JICA–Zambia partnership that has delivered seven modern Level-1 hospitals across Lusaka and the Copperbelt, expanding access to quality primary hospital care.
In Lusaka District, the programme first upgraded Chilenje and Matero health centres into full first-level hospitals under Phase I which were commissioned in 2017, followed by Chawama, Chipata, and Kanyama under Phase II which were commissioned in 2021.
The facilities now offer inpatient services, emergency care, improved diagnostics, and surgical capacity, including caesarean sections.
JICA has also continued to strengthen operations at these five Lusaka hospitals, supporting hospital management, infection prevention and control, drug and medical equipment management, so that they can reliably deliver maternal, newborn, and child health services as well as other essential care.
Recent Cassiopeia Project activities highlight ongoing capacity building at Chilenje, Matero, Chawama, Chipata, and Kanyama.

On the Copperbelt, JICA’s 2020 Grant Aid project transformed Mushili Hospital in Ndola and Chamboli Hospital in Kitwe into modern Level-1 facilities, with new buildings and equipment.
Chamboli was handed over in June 2024, and Mushili followed in August 2025, at a total project cost of approximately US$32 million.
The seven hospitals represent a sustained, multi-year investment in Zambia’s frontline hospital network, pairing infrastructure upgrades with training and equipment systems to strengthen service delivery and advance universal health coverage.
