Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday for surgery to remove a small, localised lung nodule, with his hospital stay expected to last approximately one week.

Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni says the Pope’s admission follows routine medical examinations.

Mr Bruni says the procedure will require changes to the Pope’s scheduled activities, including his participation in a meeting marking the tenth anniversary of the publication of Amoris Laetitia.

Pope Leo XIV will not attend the afternoon session of the meeting at the Paul VI Hall.

He has also asked Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and Dean of the College of Cardinals, to preside over the Mass scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, in St Peter’s Square.

The Mass will bring together participants in the anniversary meeting, including heads of Eastern Churches, presidents of bishops’ conferences, married couples and experts.
