With kachasu continuing to be produced and sold informally in some communities despite concerns over its production and safety, Zambia Consumers Association ZACA president Juba Sakala has called for the beverage to be formalised and regulated.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Zambian Business Times-ZBT Sakala said instead of authorities repeatedly confiscating and destroying kachasu, the need should be to explore ways of bringing its production into the formal sector and improving the safety, quality and packaging of the beverage.
He noted that the government engaging scientists and other relevant experts can help to establish the requirements to make kachasu safer and compliant with the necessary standards.
“Why can’t we get the scientists and tell them, what can we do to make this beer official? What do we need to do? How is the packaging? How is the manufacturing?” Sakala said.
He noted that the continued demand for alcohol simply shows that removing kachasu from the market may not provide a lasting solution.

Sakala further proposed that kachasu producers could be organised into formal schemes where they would have access to appropriate equipment, proper production areas and sanitation facilities.
“Why can’t we get that type of industry? We make an out-grower scheme. Let us try to give them equipment, with a good area, sanitation and so on,” he said.
He added that formalising the production process could allow authorities to regulate how kachasu is produced while also addressing consumer safety concerns.
Sakala further noted that experts could also examine the manufacturing and packaging processes to determine how the beverage could be produced under controlled conditions.
He said Zambia should therefore consider finding a practical solution to kachasu production instead of continuing to focus only on raids and destruction of the beverage.
Sakala said the country had the expertise to explore possible solutions, but there was a need for commitment to turn such ideas into practical measures.
“Ideas are there, but do we have somebody who can steer that idea? That is the issue,” he said. Kachasu is a colourless beverage brewed usually using molasses and is illegally sold in shady ways to dodge law enforcement officers, with those found in possession facing a k60,000 fine.
