Police in Serenje District, Central Province, have launched investigations into a suspected murder-suicide involving a 44-year-old woman and her 33-year-old husband whose bodies were discovered in Chibale area.

Police Spokesperson, Chipo Kaitisha, identified the deceased as Ruth Mushili and Milan Musonda, both residents of Chibale.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Kaitisha said the incident was believed to have occurred between 18:00 hours on October 16 and 07:00 hours on October 17, 2026.

She said preliminary information indicated that the couple had a misunderstanding on October 14, which escalated into a fight, prompting them to seek intervention from officers of the Community Crime Prevention Unit.

Kaitisha said the couple was advised to return for further guidance but did not do so.

She said the two were reportedly seen drinking beer together at Chibale Market on October 16 but did not return home, prompting family members and residents to search the surrounding area.

“During the search, a juvenile discovered the body of a man about 50 metres from the main road and alerted members of the community. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a woman’s body about five metres away,” Kaitisha said.

She said police were notified and responded to the scene, where they retrieved the bodies, which were later identified as those of Musonda and Mushili.

Kaitisha said preliminary observations raised suspicion that Mushili may have been murdered by her husband before he allegedly took his own life.

She said Mushili reportedly had blood coming from her left ear and a swollen cheek.

“However, the circumstances surrounding the deaths and possible motive are yet to be established,” she said.

Kaitisha said the bodies had been deposited at Serenje District Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations to establish the causes of death.

She said investigations into the incident were ongoing.

Kaitisha urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes peacefully and seek assistance from relevant authorities whenever disagreements arise.
