COPPERBELT Province police commanding officer, Mwala Yuyi has called on politicians to stop dragging law enforcement officers into political disputes and to always tell the truth when commenting on police operations.
His comment comes after National Reconciliation Part for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) running mate Makebi Zulu alleged that armed police officers blocked him and his presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, forcing them to leave Chipulukusu.
Zulu claimed the officers demanded the duo to leave the Copperbelt Province immediately the district as President Hakainde Hichilema was expected to be in the province.
The politician also said officers surround and barricade Fatmols lodge where they were lodging after a church service they attended yesterday.
Speaking to #Kalemba in an exclusive interview, Yuyi said police officers were doing their routine patrols to ensure peace and safety.
He stressed that it is wrong to link police officers to political decisions they are completely not involved in.
“Stop the false accusations and learn to tell the truth. Our officers are humble, hardworking men and women whose job is to serve and protect every citizen, not to become pawns in political battles,” he said.
Going forward, Yuyi said he will not tolerate lies being told against innocent officers over things they do not do.
He said pointing fingers at officers for actions they did not take erodes public trust, damages their reputation.
Yuyi added that the men and women in uniform are public servants and should be not be dragged in partisan politics.
“I know that everyone wants to be heard, but involving [public] servants, especially police officers, in your politics is dangerous. We are not a political party. We are not on anyone’s campaign team. Our uniform has no color of any party,” Yuyi said.
The provincial police chief also called for evidence-based complaints, and urged politicians with genuine grievances to always use official channels.
“If you have evidence of misconduct, bring it through the proper channels. If you have no evidence, then stop the false accusations, aways tell the truth, even when the truth is uncomfortable,” he said.
Yuyi further appealed for cooperation between leaders and security wings.
