Newly elected Lusaka Mayor, Chitambala Mwewa Chitambala’s “Throw It in the Bin” campaign has sparked widespread excitement on social media, with many residents praising his hands-on approach to tackling litter and restoring cleanliness in the capital.

The campaign encourages residents to dispose of waste responsibly as part of the mayor’s vision for a cleaner city.

The campaign, launched shortly after Mwewa assumed office, has seen the mayor personally moving around the city with a loudhailer urging residents, traders and motorists to throw rubbish into bins instead of littering the streets.

His message, “Throw it in the bin,” has quickly become a catchphrase online.

The initiative attracted thousands of reactions and dozens of shares on Facebook, where many users applauded the mayor’s determination while others responded with humour.

One Facebook user, Jazz Jazz, joked: “Mulusaka you will learn how to be clean.”

Chipego Choopa predicted that the city was in for “a busy five years,” a sentiment echoed by several other users who suggested residents would have to get used to stricter enforcement of cleanliness.

Tarrie M Tinana said City Market was already looking cleaner, adding that Lusaka was headed for “a very busy five years of cleaning.”

Beene Mambo declared, “My vote has started working,” reflecting optimism that campaign promises were already translating into action.

Some users also called for the campaign to extend beyond littering.

Sharon Kalala appealed to the mayor to address people who smoke in public places, while Alice Tayali urged authorities to also sensitise bus conductors on maintaining cleanliness.

Kamubene Stanley encouraged business owners across the country to repaint their shops, saying cleaner buildings would improve the appearance of cities and towns.

Others poked fun at motorists and public transport operators, with Nina Rosemary Mwazanji joking that bus drivers and wheelbarrow pushers were in for “a very long five years.”

Mukamba Kaluba Ruth said she could already “smell a clean Lusaka,” while Bridget Mwenzi Tembo simply remarked that “The mayor is working.”

Charity Nyambe praised the mayor’s energetic public awareness campaign, describing him as a “one-man commando” for sanitation sensitisation.

The flood of positive and humorous reactions suggests that the mayor’s anti-litter campaign has struck a chord with many Lusaka residents, who expressed hope that sustained enforcement and public cooperation will transform the capital into a cleaner and more organised city.
