The United Party for National Development (UPND) has won the Lwingishi Ward by-election in Mansa District after its candidate, James Mwandu, polled 1,832 votes against 1,152 votes secured by the National Reconciliation Party for National Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) candidate, Chanda Chimba, representing a winning margin of 680 votes.
Mansa East Returning Officer Ladclif Chishimba officially announced the results, declaring Mr Mwandu the winner and newly elected councillor for Lwingishi Ward.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of the UPND candidate before the August 13th, 2026 General Election, which occurred after the close of nominations.
The UPND says the victory reflects the confidence the people of Luapula Province have in its leadership and their support for the Government’s Grow Zambia agenda.
A total of 3,039 votes were cast out of 5,974 registered voters in Lwingishi Ward, representing a voter turnout of approximately 50.9 per cent.
