Sakwiba Sikota SC has admitted that the Tonse Alliance is pushing to petition the August elections not on merit, but to delay President-Elect Hakainde Hichilema’s inauguration and cause embarrassment.
Speaking during a meeting, Mr. Sikota said:
“We have to ensure that the petition is filed. This is to attract international attention and to help us discredit the elections. We must embarrass Hichilema as much as we can.”
Sources within the opposition legal team say they are struggling to gather credible evidence to prove the elections were flawed.
The lawyers currently drafting the petition include Derby Aongola, Sakwiba Sikota SC, Chifumu Banda SC, and Bonaventure Mutale SC.
According to insiders, the team is relying on the vague CCMG report and does not have a record of proceedings from the ECZ. The Alliance also did not field candidates in 72 constituencies.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel Mwamba and academic Sishuwa Sishuwa have been pushing claims that government is frustrating the petition, including false reports of soldiers being deployed at the High Court to block filing.
“The opposition must accept defeat,” the source said. “Even before voting, the ruling party already had 8 unopposed MPs. How do you expect to win when you didn’t contest in 72 constituencies?”
As the opposition want to hold the country to ransom, the cost on the economy is huge as government remains non functional.
